Rainy Wedding Days

I have yet to meet a bride that imagines her perfect day with clouds and pouring rain. Sure, there is always the plan B just-in-case, but it’s always just a plan B and never really the plan, but it does happen! I’d say 10% of my weddings have been rainy, which is a pretty low percentage so it really isn’t much to worry about, and there is always a plan with the venue, but what about with photography? What happens with the photography timeline if it rains on your wedding day? Here are the best 4 things you should know just in case it does rain on your wedding day.

  1. Be flexible! As much as I can, I keep an eye on the weather, and the day before I look at the hourly forecast and compare it to what the day’s events are. We might have planned to do outdoor couple’s portraits after the first look, but if it says that it will clear in the afternoon then we can just move the portrait time to after the family portraits before the reception. I do my best and keep lots of notes. Just know that these are important and it will be worth being flexible for!
  2. Trust me. I know I KNOW! When the rain comes and your hair and make up are done and the dress is perfect, that rain can seem very intimidating. I have 2 bubble umbrellas that I keep with me at every wedding day so that we can do cute portraits. The rain is a part of your story and this is the best way I help tell the story! Trust that I am keeping an eye for the best opportunity and your hair and dress will be just fine! Wet is a lot better than dirt! Wet does not show! So a little wet on the bottom will never show up. Also, I am always looking for cover with great light. If I know the rain won’t go away I am on the hunt for the perfect location where the light is perfect and there is plenty of cover.
  3. Embrace it! Like I said before, the rain is a part of your story! I am going to tell the story of your day and rain can be very romantic and sweet. If anything it brings you closer together! That umbrella is only so big so it makes your nice and cosy!
  4. Take comfort! For those who have a rained out day but were hoping for that amazing sunny glow for portraits, I offer “Day After” sessions! This does not have to be the day after, this can be anytime after that is convenient a few weeks after the wedding. It will cost extra for the hair and make up, but it will not cost extra for me, unless there is travel. We will plan on a sunny evening and the session is one hour. You will have the portraits you imagined so you can relax on your wedding day!
